Ready for Windows 10?

Many have asked me, “Should I upgrade to Windows 10?” The answer to this question is it depends. Every company uses computers differently but the process used to evaluate an operating system upgrade has the same basic steps.

Is your hardware compatible? Windows 10 requires the same computer specifications as Windows 7. In short, if you are satisfied with the performance of Windows 7 on your computer then you will likely be satisfied with the performance of Windows 10. Beware! Microsoft is careful to state that some features – both current and future – may require higher specifications.

Is your software compatible? Microsoft Office 2007 and higher is supported on Windows 10. The latest versions of anti-malware software currently or will soon support Windows 10. Check to be certain the version you are running supports Windows 10. The latest releases of Firefox, Chrome and Safari are supported. The latest versions of ancillary programs like Java, Adobe Reader, Flash, Shockwave and Air are supported on Windows 10. Any other software you use should also be checked for compatibility. Some may require you to upgrade to the latest version. Your company’s IT support staff can determine if legacy applications are supported. Some features of previous Windows versions have been removed from Windows 10. You can find a list of them here.

Are your peripherals supported? Keyboards, mice, monitors and speakers are standard items often compatible with Windows 10 without needing drivers. If any of these devices require drivers to enable certain features, check with the manufacturer to determine compatibility. Some printers and scanners require drivers specific to the make and model of the device. Check with the manufacturer to determine whether or not your printer or scanner is compatible.

Is there a benefit to Windows 10? The Start Menu is back although it is not identical to Windows 7. Go here to compare more features of Windows 7, 8.1 and 10. Take a look at what’s new in Windows 10 here. Microsoft Edge is the replacement for Internet Explorer. Cortana is a new personal assistant application. The Microsoft Store is updated and features applications similar to Apple’s App Store, Google Play and others.
